This city is situated in the southern province of
Sri Lanka, 160KM from Colombo. The Nilwala River,
which has fertilized the entire region, runs through
the town flowing eventually to the sea. Tourists
from around the world are attracted to Matara’s
natural scenic beauty. Paddy fields, Tea Estates
& Fragrant Spice Plantation stretching to the
horizon. This City is also famous for its safe,
sandy beaches.
The oldest part of the town is on a narrow peninsula
separated from the mainland by the estuary of the
Nilwala Ganga, with a good beach on its seaward
side. As they did at Galle, the Dutch encircled
this easily defended spit of land with sturdy stonewalls,
which are still in good shape. Within the walls
is a charming district of ramshackle old buildings,
many of them dating from the Dutch colonial era.
